William E. Light collection of New York City photographs [graphic]. ca. 1880-1889.

The collection consists of 65 photographic prints of New York City views in the 1880s by one or more unidentified photographers when simpler equipment opened photography to more part-time enthusiasts. Many of the views focus on people and street activities in Manhattan's Union Square area: nuns, shoeshine boys, children playing, men conversing, photographers, salesmen, well-dressed women, carriages, and animals. Many photographs show excellent details of 1880s clothing. Only a few images are dated, among them an 1886 New York Athletic Club running race, the Blizzard of 1888, and the 1889 Washington Inaugural Centennial parade. One photograph shows the procession for Ulysses S. Grants funeral in 1885. The collection also contains beach scenes, snow scenes, and views of rooftops.

65 photographic prints on 46 cardboard mounts : b&w ; 8 1/2 x 6 1/2 in. or smaller.
